Probiotics are organisms that contain beneficial bacteria that support your immune system and overall health. Many supplements and foods can boost the level of probiotics in your body and in turn, reduce the risk of developing diarrhea or certain infections.

Most probiotics are naturally found in your gut and can help ensure you have a strong and diverse microbiome. Probiotics can aid in healthy digestion, support your gut lining, and counteract the effects of bad bacteria that may be harming your body.

Along with maintaining a healthy diet, incorporating probiotic foods or supplements into your daily routine will help you achieve strong gut health in the long term. Ultimately, a diverse gut microbiome will also aid in hormonal balance as well.

What probiotics to use for your symptoms

Constipation: Those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) often experience constipation as one of their main symptoms. As probiotics often improve digestion, they may benefit those experiencing constipation. Studies have shown that B. Lactis has been proven to provide constipation relief and reduce bloating in children. B. longum and S. cerevisiae are also probiotics that could relieve constipation in individuals.

Probiotics could also be used to prevent diarrhea, and a combination of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains have been effective in relieving this symptom. This is achieved by reducing stool frequency and increasing the presence of beneficial bacteria.

Brain Health: Since your gut health and brain health are quite interconnected, the number and types of probiotics in your gut can have an impact on your mental health as well. Some probiotics like  L. rhamnosus HN001 could reduce depression and anxiety, especially during the postpartum period.

General Health: Probiotics could reduce the risk of infections, boost your immunity, and reduce inflammation. However, if you are immunocompromised or have pre-existing conditions, you may experience adverse effects, so it is important to consider many sources before taking probiotics.
